Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral, mined in countries such as Russia, Canada, Brazil and China.

Asbestos occurs in six forms but only three have been used industrially in the UK:

The demand for asbestos is declining in Europe and North America but consumption is increasing in Africa, Asia and South America.

In the UK, the sale and use of asbestos containing materials was finally prohibited in November 1999.

Asbestos related diseases include Asbestosis, Mesothelioma or Lung Cancer. Disease is usually a result of long-term exposure to airborne asbestos fibres.
